Grand Rapids Press: Michigan transportation funding at a crossroads
From Grand Rapids Press:
Michigan roads will continue to deteriorate unless the state finds new sources of revenue. Gas prices are headed north again, along with summer travelers seeking cooler climes. The spike in fuel costs and seasonal migration are twin reminders that the state is fast approaching a crisis in how we pay for our roads -- a crisis with huge ramifications. The problem was pointed up by Michigan Department of Transportation Director Kirk Steudle in an appearance earlier this month before the House and Senate transportation committees. Mr. Steudle identified 2011 as the "magic year" when Michigan will not have enough gas tax coming in to match federal dollars.
