Houston Chronicle: Let's keep nature in mind as we mend infrastructure
From Houston Chronicle:
America is rightfully embarking upon an ambitious plan for rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure. Many of our bridges, roads, water delivery systems and vital networks are in disrepair. But as we rebuild with an eye towards strengthening our economy, we should give equal thought to the role that nature plays in our lives and consider the steep price we will pay if we fail to protect it now. Unlike old bridges and crumbling wastewater lines, ecosystems are millions of years in the making, yet can be irreparably damaged in the blink of an eye.

“More than any single action by the government since the end of the war, this one would change the face of America with straightaways, cloverleaf turns, bridges, and elongated parkways. Its impact on the American economy—the jobs it would produce in manufacturing and construction, the rural areas it would open up—was beyond calculation.”
