Observer Dispatch: Guest's view: Infrastructure backbone of our nation

Funding for transportation can provide a much needed “shot in the arm” for the economy and begin to address the terrific backlog of transportation needs across the country. Even with what seems like large sums of money potentially going to transportation in this legislation, no matter how much short-term funding Congress allocates for transportation, we will still face critical decisions about the long-term transportation funding needs of the nation. Ensuring we have a transportation system that can support the economic vitality we hope to see restored in the not so distant future will require a multi-year commitment of substantial resources, and a new vision for the system. President Obama has promised new approaches to old problems. This would be a good place to begin.
