Oregonian Editorial: Don't delay transportation bill

From Oregonian Editorial

Rep. Peter DeFazio is right to press for reform and reject the Obama administration's go-slow transportation policy.  U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has made no secret of the fact that he's dazzled by Portland, and on Wednesday, the city reciprocated in kind. It provided LaHood with the perfect backdrop for symbolically flipping a switch.  Unveiling the first streetcar to be made in America in six decades gave LaHood a way to signal what he called "the dawn of a new era for public transportation in the United States." It could also be the dawn of something very big for Oregon Iron Works. Any transportation revolution that reinstates streetcars, widely, in American cities could give the Clackamas-based streetcar manufacturer a huge boost.  But while LaHood's personal dedication to "replicating Portland" is palpable -- and it's already paying off for this region -- it looks as if the Obama administration as a whole is inclined to put the revolution on hold. What the president plans to do to launch it, beyond touting Portland, gets a little fuzzy.
