The Oregonian: US Offers $100 Million in Stimulus for Mass Transit to Fight Greenhouse Gases

From The Oregonian:

The U.S. Department of Transportation today announced $100 million in economic stimulus money is available for mass transit projects that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.  "This grant program establishes the transit industry as a leader in reducing America's dependence on foreign oil, addressing global climate change and creating green jobs," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Projects will compete for a portion of the funds on the basis of how much their capital investment is expected to reduce either energy consumption or greenhouse gases, or both, the department said.  Transit agencies may apply under the grant program, the department said.
