Seattle Times: Mayor Nickels' strategy to boost payrolls (WA)

SeattleMayor Greg Nickels said Wednesday he intends to add new jobs in 2009 and 2010 byaccelerating some city projects, instead of doing them in later years.  Theseinclude park and street improvements that voters already approved in recentballot measures.  Besides boosting payrolls in the current recession —especially for union construction workers — the mayor's Seattle Jobs Forwardprovides an issue for this year's re-election campaign, by casting Nickels as ajobs creator.  He said the plan involves $315 million and 1,500 added jobs. "Infrastructure is the best thing you can do for the economy," said Lee Newgent,executive-secretary of the Seattle-King County Building and Construction TradesCouncil.
