South Bend Tribune: Stimulus money aimed at improving harbors
From South Bend Tribune:
More than $41 million in federal stimulus funding is going toward dredging channels and repairing outdated structures at 10 harbors in Michigan, according to the Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In all, the eight Great Lakes states secured $94 million for such work. But shipping organizations complained that only 2 percent of the money distributed nationwide went to the Great Lakes states. "We do not think the Corps did a good job of divvying out these stimulus dollars," said Glen Nekvasil, vice president of the Lakes Carriers' Association. "The Great Lakes are a commercial shipping power. There are lots of people here, lots of jobs needed and a dredging backload."
