OUR VIEW: S.C. needs infrastructure funds in stimulus package. South Carolina leaders are battling over the government's proposed economic stimulus package. Gov. Mark Sanford says the state does not want federal money that will mean huge growth in national debt. U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint is leading opposition to President Obama's plan in the upper chamber. Sixth District Congressman and House Majority Whip James Clyburn did an end run around Sanford with an amendment to the House-passed $819 billion plan by inserting an amendment that gives legislative leaders authority to approve receiving the funding if the governor fails to act in 45 days.
