Wall Street Journal: Stimulus could mean jobs for 670,000 construction workers
From Wall Street Journal:
From upgrading the electricity grid to rebuilding bridges tocomputerizing medical records, there are plenty of ways the economic-stimulusbill aims to prop up the economy -- and create millions of jobs. But what kinds of jobs -- and who willqualify for them? Those are questions that 11.6 million unemployed Americansmay well be asking. For constructionworkers, the stimulus plan may be the best news in years. After losing about900,000 jobs since September 2006, as many as 670,000 construction workerscould be back on the job by the end of 2010 -- if the stimulus bill works asplanned. That job growth would come fromprojects to rebuild roads and bridges, plus make schools, homes and governmentbuildings more energy-efficient, among other initiatives. Of course, construction projects aren't all alike -- workers from, say, the residentialindustry may need to retrain.
