Everyone knows South Carolina faces serious infrastructure issues (see Quick Facts). While our state’s population has grown by over 28 percent in the last ten years our infrastructure has failed to keep up. Since 1990 we have seen a 49 percent increase in traffic on our roads, and in the next decade or so we expect that to increase by another 45 percent. As a result we have seen increased congestion and maintenance issues not only on all of our interstates and major highway arteries, but also on the thousands of miles of crumbling rural roads and hundreds of structurally deficient bridges.
South Carolina’s infrastructure strains go beyond just surface transportation. Our port system, on which the state’s economy depends, needs significant improvements. We must not allow South Carolina to lose its competitive edge in attracting new businesses and new jobs due to these infrastructure deficiencies. Unless we make significant changes in our course and direction, our infrastructure will continue to deteriorate and a real opportunity to restore South Carolina’s economy will be lost. We deserve better.
In sum, South Carolina must embark on a new mission—one that requires leadership and vision from our elected leaders. To achieve this we will need a bipartisan alliance of South Carolina leaders who believe we can achieve anything, build anything, and do anything we put our minds to—and who will in turn, assure our citizens that this course is not an option but a necessity to preserve our future strength and success.
