BAF Supports Michigan Governor Snyder’s Proposal to Raise the State’s Gas Tax

WASHINGTON, DC – March 25, 2013 – Today Building America’s Future applauded Michigan Governor Rick Snyder for proposing the state raise its gas tax to pay for much needed bridge and road repairs. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently released their Infrastructure Report Card, which graded Michigan’s infrastructure a D.

“Michigan, like many states across the country, is facing a crisis,” said former Pennsylvania Governor and co-chair of Building America’s Future, Ed Rendell. “Michigan’s roads and bridges need an estimated extra $1.2 billion for maintenance and repair. The standard revenue raising mechanism, the gas tax, is losing its effectiveness and too many elected leaders are frightened to step up and suggest new solutions. We applaud Governor Snyder for his leadership, courage and practical proposal for increasing the gas tax to meet Michigan’s needs.”

The ASCE Infrastructure Report Card is released every four years. This year, the nation’s infrastructure received a D+, a slight improvement over the D the nation’s infrastructure earned in 2009.  Michigan’s D was below the national average and below several surrounding states.
