Building America’s Future Applauds Bipartisan Major Water Reform Legislation Passage through the House of Representatives

Washington, D.C.—May 20, 2014 – Today the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 412-4.  The Senate is also expected to pass WRRDA later this week and the conference report will be sent to President Obama who is expected to sign it. Building America’s Future (BAF) applauds this bipartisan progress and BAF President Marcia Hale issued the following statement:

“Today’s action is the first step to ensuring that our ports and inland waterways receive the tools and investments necessary to keep America economically competitive.  With U.S. port volume expected to double by 2020 and U.S. freight tonnage expected to increase by 88 percent by 2025, it is imperative that the reforms included in WRRDA speed up the time it takes to review, approve and build important projects.

“While BAF is pleased to see some reforms implemented to the way the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund will be spent, we are disappointed that some of the HMTF funds which should be going towards repairing and improving ports can continue to be diverted to other projects until 2025.

“We congratulate Chairmen Shuster and Boxer as well as Senator Vitter and Rep. Rahall for working together to produce a conference report that is so strongly supported by bipartisan majorities.  Now that Congress has put WRRDA behind it, we urge swift action on addressing the serious shortfalls in the Highway Trust Fund and passing a robust and long-term transportation bill this summer.”
