Four-Year, $302 Billion Surface Transportation Proposal and $600 Million TIGER Grant Proposal Will Modernize American Infrastructure and Put Americans to Work

Washington, D.C.—February 26, 2014 – Building America’s Future applauded today’s announcement from President Obama that he will lay out a proposal for a four-year, $302 billion surface transportation reauthorization and a new $600 million round of the TIGRER grant program. President Obama’s proposal also includes a one-time $150 billion infusion from corporate tax reform and comes at a time when the Highway Trust Fund is rapidly approaching insolvency and the Surface Transportation Bill is under consideration for reauthorization.

“The Highway Trust Fund is on track to go  bankrupt  this summer and if we want to modernize our country’s roads, bridges and transit systems, we need a combination of urgent action and a long term plan along the lines of what  the President is outlining today,” said former Pennsylvania Governor and Co-Chair of Building America’s Future, Ed Rendell. “As a former governor, I know how important it is for states to have certainty when it comes to transportation funding.  It is imperative that Congress and the Administration come to the table and find a bipartisan solution to our infrastructure crisis.”

“The TIGER grant program has been wildly successful and I am thrilled to see President Obama put forth a plan to refresh the competitive grant program with a new $600 million round of funding,” said former Department of Transportation Secretary and Co-Chair of Building America’s Future, Ray LaHood. “Since we started the TIGER program in 2009, it has awarded billions of dollars to hundreds of communities that want to transform their roads, rails, transit systems and ports. Demand from communities always outweighs supply from the federal government, so it is great news that TIGER grants are going to be funded for a sixth time.”

“If we want America to stay competitive in a global economy, we need to make serious investments in our infrastructure from coast to coast. I was very pleased to see the president’s proposal included measures to improve resiliency and sustainability,” said former New York City Mayor and Co-Chair of Building America’s Future Michael Bloomberg. “President Obama’s proposal will put Americans to work and will give a desperately needed jolt to our infrastructure and transportation systems.”
