Washington, D.C. – Building America’s Future (BAF) is pleased to announce that Pennsylvania State Representative William Keller has joined BAF as a member. Building America’s Future, a bipartisan coalition of current and former elected officials, is co-chaired by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I), former Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood (R), and former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell (D).
State Rep. William Keller, D-Phila., has been a staunch advocate of infrastructure improvements since beginning his career as a longshoreman in his home city of Philadelphia. Elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1993, Keller has supported various legislative efforts to expand and update the state’s infrastructure, particularly the Port of Philadelphia. A former Democratic chairman of the House Labor & Industry Committee, Keller lobbied for the expansion and development of the Port of Philadelphia throughout the past decade, emphasizing the importance of building economic development in the region. Keller supported the Delaware River Main Channel Deepening Project in 2008 with legislation, signed into law by then-Gov. Ed Rendell, that ushered the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority into a cooperation agreement with the federal government to help get the project started. In addition, another bill, sponsored by Rep. Keller and signed into law by then-Gov. Ed Rendell, directed the state to convey to the Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development and the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority the necessary land to expand the Port of Philadelphia. More recently, Rep. Keller stood alongside Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and other elected officials to announce the expansion of the Port’s Southport Marine Terminal Complex. Keller currently serves as the Democratic chairman of the House Transportation Committee, which oversees legislation relating to all modes of transportation in Pennsylvania, including highways, airports, train service, public transit, and ports, as well as the Turnpike Commission and the state Department of Transportation.
“We are pleased to have Rep. Keller join BAF,” said former Pennsylvania governor and current Building America’s co-chair Ed Rendell. “Bill Keller has been a longtime advocate of increasing funding for our roads, bridges, rails, airports and seaports, and we welcome his advocacy and ideas to our organization. Pennsylvania has the highest number of structurally deficient bridges of any state in the United States, and we are glad to see leaders like Rep. Keller fighting to ensure that this is addressed, to ensure the safety of all the residents of the Pennsylvania while promoting economic growth. We welcome his membership and look forward to his help and insight into spurring investment in smart and innovative infrastructure projects.”
