Statement by Building America’s Future on House of Representatives’ Passage of the Highway and Transportation Funding Act of 2014

Washington, DC – July 15, 2014 – Today, Building America’s Future (BAF) co-chair Ray LaHood released the following statement on the United States House of Representatives’ passage of H.R. 5021, the Highway and Transportation Funding Act of 2014:

“While we are pleased that the House acted in a bipartisan way to prevent the immediate bankruptcy of the Highway Trust Fund, we continue to be disappointed by the inability of Congress to make the hard choices needed to provide a long-term sustainable revenue source to keep the Trust Fund in the black,” said BAF co-chair and former Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. "Hard-working men and women across America are relying on Congress to fix the Highway Trust Fund so they can stay on the job repairing our roads and bridges. This is too important to our nation’s economy to approach in such a patchwork manner.  I am also troubled by the non-binding language in the legislation that suggests the states take on a greater role and responsibility in funding America’s transportation network. There is a clear and unequivocal federal role here.”
